School safety plans for protected kids
The law took effect upon becoming law. Tennessee public schools must make and carry out safety plans for students protected by orders against another student at the same school. Schools must act as soon as possible, within five school days after receiving a copy of the order. The principal develops the plan with parent or legal guardian input, involving the school safety team when reasonably practical and appropriate. Plans must cover sharing the order with school administrators, campus security, or a school resource officer. Schools must separate the students as much as possible, including removing the restrained student from shared classes, events, or activities. Plans must also address avoiding contact between classes and using separate lunch and break locations. Plans must let students report contact to a counselor, principal, or trusted staff member and document attempted contact by the restrained student. School staff must notify local law enforcement when an order violation is suspected. Parents or legal guardians must report any order changes within 48 hours so the school can update the plan as needed.
