Private colleges gain charter options with limits
Effective upon becoming law, the law lets private colleges with Tennessee campuses establish public charter schools, including religiously affiliated colleges. The sponsor is the proposed governing body that files the application. For-profit entities and nonpublic schools cannot sponsor these schools, and nonpublic schools cannot establish them. Colleges acting as sponsors must have regional accreditation. The law also broadens certain charter-school rules to cover both public and private colleges in Tennessee.
