New degree path for Tennessee librarians
Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee must recognize an advanced degree in media and technology toward a library information specialist endorsement. The State Board of Education must consult with the Department of Education on this credential path. The degree counts as a qualifying advanced degree; it does not automatically grant the endorsement.
New library staffing rules for Tennessee students
Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee public schools serving grades 9–12 must meet enrollment-based library staffing rules. Schools with 750–1,500 students, including both endpoints, must employ at least one full-time library information specialist. Schools with fewer than 750 students must employ a part-time specialist or name a teacher as library information coordinator. Both full-time and part-time specialists must hold a library information specialist endorsement. When the library is open during regular school hours without a specialist, a teacher or other staff member must supervise students.
