New training rules for court-appointed child advocates

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee requires role-specific training for court-appointed child advocates called guardians ad litem under §36-4-132. Training must include early childhood, child, and adolescent development, taught by a qualified professional. Courts can appoint someone before training is complete, but that person must finish within three years of their first appointment. Those appointed before July 1, 2026, can continue being appointed and serving without training. They must finish the required training before July 1, 2029.
