High-scoring eighth graders enter Algebra I

Beginning in 2027–2028, Tennessee public school districts and public charter schools must place qualifying eighth graders in advanced math. Students qualify by scoring “exceeds expectations” on seventh-grade TCAP math. They enter Algebra I or a State Board-approved equivalent instead of regular eighth-grade math. Schools must notify parents before school starts; parents can opt out in writing by 30 days after the first school day. Enrolled students must take the course’s end-of-course exam. Completing Algebra I in eighth grade meets the high-school Algebra I requirement if the State Board requires it for graduation.

Grading rules cover eighth-grade high-school courses

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee’s uniform grading system must include high-school course grades earned by eighth graders. Related grading rules also cover eighth graders’ high-school course grades and kindergarten-through-eighth-grade coursework. These changes do not specify a new grade calculation.

Math teachers get no-cost Algebra pathway

Tennessee’s State Board must create a teaching pathway by rule, working with the Department of Education. Educators qualify if they hold a license or endorsement to teach eighth-grade math. The pathway lets them teach Algebra I or a State Board-approved equivalent to eighth graders, at no additional cost.

Advanced math standards for younger students

Tennessee’s standards committee must include advanced math standards in its final math recommendation to the State Board. These standards cover students taking advanced math courses in grades five through seven. The law does not require schools to offer a particular advanced course.
