Who is exempt from geology licensing

Licensed professionals under other Virginia laws, including engineers, can keep practicing without a geology license. Archaeologists, chemists, geographers, and oceanographers may do geological analyses and give recommendations, but not design or run geological investigations. People working under the direct supervision of a licensed geologist may practice, but they cannot sign off on final reports or decisions. Anyone certified as a professional geologist before July 1, 2025 may continue to practice under that certification. Federal officers, employees, agents, and contractors are exempt when acting only in their federal role.
