2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Pregnancy and postpartum mental health covered

If your Virginia private plan has obstetrical benefits, it covers maternal mental health care. You get at least one screening while pregnant and at least one in the first six weeks after birth. Your provider can order more postpartum screenings when medically needed. Plans also cover inpatient care and one or more home visits, following current medical guidelines. Plans must update coverage within six months after the guidelines change. FDA‑approved drugs for maternal mental health do not need prior authorization unless there are serious safety or effectiveness concerns. These rules apply to policies delivered, reissued, extended, or changed on or after July 1, 1996. Maternal mental health includes conditions during pregnancy and after birth, including postpartum depression.

Which Virginia plans must cover this care

Starting January 1, 2027, any accident and sickness policy, subscription contract, or health care plan issued, delivered, or renewed in Virginia must follow these maternal mental health coverage rules. Some policies are not covered: short‑term travel, accident‑only, limited or specified disease policies, and policies for people eligible for Medicare or similar government plans.
