Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.

Four-day school weeks allowed, 990 hours

The law lets individual schools propose, and school boards approve, a four-day school week. Any approved plan must still give at least 990 hours of instruction for grades K–12 each year. Plans must follow Board of Education guidelines.

School start dates and local exceptions

The first required school day is no earlier than 14 days before Labor Day. If a division opens before Labor Day, schools close from the Friday before Labor Day through Labor Day unless the Board of Education grants a waiver. A waiver is allowed only for schools that run year‑round programs, and it applies only to those schools for that year. In Planning District 16, certain divisions may open earlier than Labor Day, including earlier than 14 days, based on past waiver status or if surrounded by two qualifying neighbors. Divisions that send students to Northern Neck Technical Center may also open earlier than Labor Day.
