Easier hiring for peer recovery specialists with records

The law requires the Virginia Department of Health and the Department of Corrections to set hiring guidelines for paid peer recovery specialists with past criminal convictions. The guidelines must spell out job requirements for each program and position. They must allow hiring that is no stricter than the state’s barrier‑crime exceptions for adult mental health or adult substance abuse treatment programs. This makes it easier for qualified applicants with records to get paid peer recovery jobs at these two agencies. The law does not change other barrier‑crime rules or set funding or deadlines.
