Mental health training and credits for firefighters

Virginia fire departments must create mental health awareness training for their personnel. The course must cover stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, compulsive behaviors and addiction; fighting stigma; responding to aggression like domestic violence and harassment; finding mental health care; and stress management, self‑care, and resiliency. The Department of Fire Programs must provide a two‑hour, virtual, asynchronous course that covers these topics by December 1, 2026. Departments can use that course or any program that meets the law’s topics. Firefighters who complete qualifying training receive continuing education credits from the Department of Fire Programs and the Virginia Fire Services Board.
