Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Adult and pediatric sickle cell clinic network

The State Board of Health adopts rules to set up an adult and pediatric sickle cell clinic network. The network supports specialized care for people with sickle cell disease or the trait. The law does not set funding amounts or a start date.

Voluntary sickle cell screening and cancer education

The Health Commissioner runs a voluntary statewide screening program with local health directors. Adults and children can be screened for sickle cell disease, the trait, and related genetic conditions. The program teaches about these conditions and cancers more common with them, including some kidney cancers. If a condition is found, you get post-screening counseling and help finding treatment. The program can include lab tests. Providers who screen get culture- and language-appropriate materials for families and patients. Materials cover cancer risks, warning signs and surveillance, referrals for treatment, and speaking up to providers. The Board reviews the program and updates ages and methods as technology changes.
