Alzheimer’s Commission continues through 2029

The law keeps the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Commission in place through July 1, 2029. The Commission helps people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers by studying needs and advising the Governor and General Assembly. It develops and promotes brain health strategies and a statewide plan. It must file an electronic report each year by October 1, posted on state websites. The Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services provides staff, and all state agencies must help on request. The Commission can accept and spend grants, gifts, and bequests.

Alzheimer’s Commission membership and meetings

The Commission has 20 members: 15 citizen members and five ex officio, nonvoting agency leaders or their designees. The Speaker names three, Senate Rules names two, and the Governor names ten (seven from Virginia Alzheimer’s Association chapters and three from the public). Citizen members must be Virginia citizens and serve four-year terms; no one may serve more than two in a row. Vacancies are filled for the time left, and a partial term does not count toward the limit. Members elect a chair and vice-chair; a majority of voting members is a quorum; the Commission meets at least four times a year. Ex officio members serve while they hold those offices. Members get pay and expense reimbursement under state law, funded by the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services.
