Autonomous crash trucks allowed in work zones

The Virginia Department of Transportation can run a pilot using autonomous truck‑mounted crash attenuators in mobile work zones on state highways. A mobile work zone is a slow, multi‑vehicle job moving 25 mph or less, like striping, debris removal, or pothole repair. In active zones, a crash truck may run in autonomous mode behind a lead vehicle. A remote operator must watch it and can steer or stop it. No driver is needed inside then. Outside active zones, including travel to and from a site, a human must be in the cab and drive, and all traffic laws apply. Each truck must pass a Department‑approved test plan showing reliable leader‑follower performance, and the Department must approve the results. The Department files a yearly status report by December 1. These pilot powers end December 31, 2031.
