Virginia health plan to cut opioid overdoses

The law requires the Virginia Department of Health to create a statewide plan to reduce opioid overdoses and deaths. The department evaluates current prevention, intervention, and treatment efforts to find needs and gaps. It works with the Secretaries of Education; Health and Human Resources; and Public Safety and Homeland Security. It also collaborates with state agencies and other stakeholders. The department must report status and progress to the Governor. Reports also go to the House Appropriations and Health and Human Services Chairs. They go to the Senate Education and Health and Finance and Appropriations Chairs. They go to the Joint Commission on Health Care. The first report is due November 1, 2026, then yearly after.
