Disabled parking plates for veterans

The Department of Motor Vehicles issues disabled‑parking plates for veterans who have a disability that limits walking. You must submit a certification signed by a licensed physician, podiatrist, chiropractor, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant. These plates show the access symbol and allow you to use accessible parking spaces.

One vehicle registration fee waived for disabled veterans

The law waives the annual registration fee and one annual plate fee for one vehicle you own and use personally. You must be a disabled veteran with VA proof of a service‑connected disability, or the unremarried surviving spouse. The vehicle must display the special disabled‑veteran plate from this law or the standard passenger plate. The waiver covers only one motor vehicle per eligible person.

Disabled veteran plates, not for accessible parking

The Department of Motor Vehicles issues permanent red, white, and blue plates with the letters “DV” to veterans with a VA‑certified service‑connected disability and to unremarried surviving spouses. Veterans must provide VA proof when applying. These plates can be transferred to the unremarried surviving spouse after the veteran’s death. These regular DV plates do not allow parking in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities. Two general DMV plate rules (subdivisions B1 and B2 of § 46.2-725) do not apply to DV plates issued under this law.
