Poquoson’s new school division and board

The law creates a separate school division for all areas inside Poquoson’s city limits. A seven-member school board is appointed by the city council. Members must live in Poquoson and be qualified voters. Beginning July 1, 2026, precinct-based seats convert to at-large when each seat’s next full term begins. If a vacancy occurs, the city council fills the rest of the term. The council sets trustee pay.

Term limits and rules for Poquoson board

Trustees serve four-year terms. Beginning July 1, 2026, anyone appointed on or after that date may not serve more than two consecutive terms. A seat becomes vacant if a trustee stops living in the city. Trustees cannot also serve on city council or on any other city board, committee, or commission.
