Mental health training for Virginia firefighters

Every fire department in Virginia must provide mental health awareness training for its personnel. The training covers signs of stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, compulsive behaviors, and addiction; fighting stigma; responding to aggression like domestic violence and harassment; finding treatment and resources; and stress management, self-care, and resiliency. Firefighters who complete it receive continuing education credits from the Department of Fire Programs and the Virginia Fire Services Board. Departments can build their own, team up with others, or use any program that meets these rules. The Department of Fire Programs must also create a two-hour, virtual, self‑paced training for firefighters by December 1, 2026, which departments can use directly or as a guide.
