Study to improve fire funding fairness

The Department of Fire Programs sets up a work group to review how Fire Programs Fund aid is shared with cities and counties. Members include state budget staff, fire service groups, and county and city associations. The group surveys each locality’s fiscal stress, population, and square miles, and reviews other states’ formulas. It recommends changes that better support smaller and rural communities. The Department must send the report to the Senate and House Commerce and Labor and Appropriations chairs by November 1, 2026. The law does not change funding amounts now.
