Better nutrition and connection for seniors

The Council advises the Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services on improving senior nutrition. It guides strategies to reduce hunger and prevent malnutrition. It also advises on ways to cut social isolation and loneliness and to grow volunteer engagement.

Senior Council report and grant authority

By October 1 each year, the Council sends an electronic report on its work and recommendations to the Governor, General Assembly, and the Department. The report is published and posted on the General Assembly's and the Department's websites. The Council can apply for and spend grants, gifts, or bequests for its duties, and must follow any conditions on those funds.

Stronger state planning for seniors

The law requires the Commonwealth Council on Aging to study seniors' and caregivers' needs and service gaps. It advises the Governor and General Assembly on aging policy and recommends budget requests. It reviews proposed rules when the Planning and Budget Director finds a big, distinct impact on seniors. It helps develop the statewide plan and reviews the four-year plan for aging services.
