Work-zone safety trucks can drive themselves

The law authorizes the Virginia Department of Transportation to run a pilot for autonomous truck‑mounted attenuators in mobile work zones on state highways. These zones move at 25 miles per hour or less during maintenance work. In active mobile work zones, the safety truck may operate in a leader‑follower setup without a driver inside. A remote operator must watch it, see the area, and be able to steer or stop it. Outside active work zones, a human driver must be inside and follow all driving laws. Each unit must pass a Department‑approved test plan, and the Department must approve the results before use. The Department submits a report each year by December 1 on the pilot’s status. These provisions expire December 31, 2031.
