Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Alcohol and drunk driving lessons at school

The law requires public schools to teach about alcohol abuse, underage drinking, and drunk driving dangers. The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority provides materials to the Department of Education. The Department reviews the materials and sends approved versions to schools. Students get state-reviewed lessons on alcohol safety.

Schools teach about drugs, gambling, screens

The law requires instruction on drugs and drug abuse, gambling and its addictive potential, and time on electronic devices and addiction risk. The Virginia Board of Education sets the standards and content. Public schools must teach these lessons. The goal is to help students and families understand these risks.

Tobacco and hemp health lessons in schools

The law requires lessons on the health and safety risks of tobacco and hemp products intended for smoking. The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth develops the classroom materials, using state legal definitions for covered products. The Department of Education distributes these materials to every school division. Each public elementary and secondary school must use these materials in teaching. This creates consistent, statewide instruction on these risks.
