No surprise additions to auto policies

Beginning January 1, 2027, these rules apply to new, amended, or renewed auto policies in Virginia. Insurers cannot add someone to your policy or household based only on third‑party data or a belief they live at your address. Disallowed sources include residential‑search and address‑match databases, public records, and credit reports. An insurer may add a person after giving you written or electronic notice at least 45 calendar days before the change. This applies only if you do not provide proof before the effective date that they do not live with you. You can show a Virginia driver’s license issued in the last six months; utility bills, a mortgage statement, or a rental insurance coverage summary dated within the last 60 days; or complete a verification interview.
