Alzheimer's commission continues through 2029

The law keeps Virginia's Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Commission in place through July 1, 2029. The commission studies the needs of people with Alzheimer's and their caregivers, promotes brain health, and sets program priorities. It advises the Governor and General Assembly on policy, funding, and rules. Each year by October 1, it files an electronic report for publication on the General Assembly and Department websites.

Pay, staff, and funding for commission

Commission members receive pay and reimbursement for reasonable, necessary expenses under state rules. The Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services funds these costs and provides staff support. All state agencies must help the commission when asked. The commission may apply for, receive, and spend grants, gifts, and bequests tied to its duties.

Who serves on the Alzheimer's commission

The commission has 20 members. Fifteen are citizen members; five state agency heads or their designees serve as nonvoting, ex officio members. The Speaker appoints 3 citizens, the Senate Rules Committee 2, and the Governor 10 (7 from Virginia Alzheimer's chapters and 3 from the public). Citizen members must be Virginia citizens, serve four-year terms, and may serve no more than two in a row; vacancies are filled the same way. The commission elects a chair and vice-chair, meets at least four times a year, and a majority of voting members is a quorum. Meetings can be called by the chair or by a majority of voting members.
