Insurance must cover menopause care

The law requires most individual and group health plans to cover medically necessary menopause and perimenopause care. This applies to policies delivered, issued for delivery, reissued, or extended in Virginia on or after January 1, 2027, and later when any term changes or premiums are adjusted. Covered care includes treatment for irregular periods, hot flashes, vaginal or bladder problems, bone loss, higher LDL cholesterol, and sleep problems. The rule does not apply to short‑term travel, accident‑only, or limited disease policies, or to policies for people eligible for Medicare or similar federal coverage. If the state’s essential health benefits benchmark already includes this benefit, the separate mandate does not apply in the individual and small‑group markets.
