Defibrillators required at local sports sites

Beginning July 1, 2028, Virginia localities must have working automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at every government sporting facility during open hours and at every government-run sporting event, even off-site. Indoor facility minimums: 1 unit under 10,000 sq. ft.; 2 units for 10,000-30,000; above 30,000 add 1 for each extra 20,000 sq. ft. Outdoor facility minimums: 1 unit under 5 acres; 2 units for 5-15 acres; above 15 acres add 1 for each extra 10 acres. Off-site event minimums: 1 unit under 500 people; 2 units for 500-2,000; above 2,000 add 1 for each extra 1,000 people. AEDs must be in a clearly marked, public spot; maintained and tested per the maker’s rules; registered with local emergency medical services; and marked with signs. Each locality must keep a plan for where AEDs go and how to care for and use them.
