New local food grants for Vermont
Beginning July 1, 2025, the law creates the Vermonters Feeding Vermonters Grant Program within Vermont’s agriculture agency. Grants support Vermont Foodbank purchases directly from Vermont farms for distribution through its network. The Foodbank also gives grants to network partners to buy food directly from local farms of all sizes. These purchases emphasize culturally preferred foods and foods that strengthen local ties. “Local food” follows Vermont’s existing legal definition for local labeling. Program duties depend on a fiscal year 2026 General Fund appropriation; the law specifies no funding amount. After consulting the agriculture secretary, the Foodbank must report to legislative agriculture committees annually by March 1. Reports must list food purchased, farms supplying it, distribution sites, and farm shares issued when supported by grants. Reports must not identify individuals, households, or businesses, or reveal identifying details.
