Schools can stock and use epinephrine
Beginning July 1, 2025, a licensed clinician can prescribe epinephrine auto-injectors in a school’s name with a standing order. The order must explain how to spot anaphylaxis, give the shot, call 911, document the event, and dispose of devices. Pharmacists or clinicians can dispense the school’s prescription. Schools may keep a stock supply and can arrange free or discounted devices. School nurses and trained staff may give or let a student use epinephrine under the student’s plan, and may treat anyone at school they believe in good faith is having anaphylaxis, even without that person’s own prescription.
Statewide allergy plans and training
Beginning July 1, 2025, the State Board sets statewide rules for managing life‑threatening allergies in schools. Schools and parents must create a written allergy plan for each student who needs one and update it each year. The rules must include steps to prevent exposure, emergency response and follow‑up, and staff training. Each school must make its protocols public.
Legal protections for school epinephrine use
Starting July 1, 2025, schools, school nurses, trained staff, and prescribers are protected from civil or criminal lawsuits for good‑faith epinephrine use at school. This protection does not apply to intentional misconduct. Giving epinephrine under these rules is not considered practicing medicine.
