Adults get mental health meds from psychologists
Beginning July 1, 2029, some doctoral psychologists in Vermont can prescribe medicines for DSM mental health conditions. Patients must be 18 to 80 years old and not pregnant. Psychologists must finish APA-designated psychopharmacology training, 14 months of rotations in five or more settings, and a national exam. They need a written agreement with a psychiatrist on file; prescribing is limited to drugs that psychiatrist commonly uses. They cannot dispense or administer drugs, and may not inject controlled substances. For Schedule II–V drugs, each approved drug must be named on their authority. Vermont can endorse similar out-of-state licensees.
Board sets rules for prescribing psychologists
Starting July 1, 2026, the Vermont Board of Psychological Examiners writes rules for the new prescribing specialty. The rules set clinical rotation settings, minimum course content, exams, and other prerequisites. The Board also sets complaint and appeal steps and continuing education. It can name conditions or drugs that are excluded and set requirements for specific drugs. It oversees collaborative practice agreements, psychiatrist qualifications, and yearly competency reviews.
