Stronger privacy for cancer and ALS patients

Beginning July 1, 2026, Vermont strengthens privacy safeguards for cancer and ALS data sharing. Before sharing identifying cancer data for national registry work or research, the Health Commissioner must obtain written confidentiality assurances. These assurances must protect the information as confidential and privileged under the law. Sharing cancer data with researchers, or ALS data through two-way research agreements, requires written proof of review-board or privacy-board approval. For ALS research, the Commissioner may share only the minimum information needed, subject to privacy, security, and disclosure protections.
