Vermont tracks state property use each year

Beginning April 6, 2026, Vermont agency heads must report on state-owned and state-leased buildings and land each year. Reports must use the format set by the Commissioner of Buildings and General Services. They must list square footage available, used, unused, used for storage, and unfinished. They must also list rent, operating, and maintenance costs per square foot, plus funding sources and applicable legislative act and section numbers. Agency heads must identify vacant buildings and land not needed for state purposes. The Commissioner must maintain and update the inventory annually and use it to decide how state space is assigned and used. The inventory is due by January 15 of each new two-year legislative cycle. It goes to the House Committee on Corrections and Institutions and the Senate Committee on Institutions. This law does not directly provide household payments or benefits.
