More cross-border preschool options for Vermont families

Beginning July 1, 2026, the NEK Choice School District can pay tuition for eligible children to attend New Hampshire prekindergarten programs. Programs must be run by public schools in New Hampshire school districts within 25 miles of Vermont’s border. Tuition support is allowed, not required. The Essex North Supervisory Union handles enrollment and tuition payments under State Board of Education rules. The superintendent can request waivers from Vermont’s Agency of Education and Agency of Human Services for impractical rules. To receive a waiver, the district must show that a substantially equivalent provision is offered.
