County forest grants change who qualifies
Wisconsin changes which forest employees qualify for state grants that help counties cover pay and benefits. Counties must have land enrolled in the county forest program. The Department of Natural Resources can award grants for one county forest administrator, but not an assistant administrator. Grants cover up to 50% of salary and 50% of eligible benefits. Benefits counted toward the grant cannot exceed 40% of salary. The administrator must manage the county forest program and cannot work for the Department. Three education paths qualify: a forestry bachelor's degree or higher from a Society of American Foresters-accredited program, or an equivalent degree approved by the chief state forester; a bachelor's degree or higher in natural resources, conservation, or wildlife plus at least three years managing a county forest program; or a forestry associate degree plus at least three years of that experience. Grants are not guaranteed. The law takes effect retroactively on January 1, 2025, and first applies to grant applications submitted on that date.
