HIV-prevention cost help for sexual assault survivors
Wisconsin Department of Justice awards now cover qualifying HIV-prevention medicine given or prescribed during a sexual assault exam process. The examiner must believe the assault could have exposed the survivor to HIV. Covered costs also include evidence-gathering exams and procedures during the exam that test for or prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Medicine given or prescribed during the exam process to prevent or treat those diseases qualifies when the examiner links the risk to the assault. Applicants must submit records from treating or examining doctors, physician assistants, or nurses covering the services claimed, including prescribed medicine. Only records related to the services in the award request may be submitted. Processing costs, administrative costs, attorney fees, and other expenses are excluded; the law sets no award amount or payment guarantee.
