More state help for kids' reading

Beginning July 1, 2026, the state funds one full-time Department of Education staffer to help school districts with reading tests and literacy programs required by law. The law provides $240,000 from the public school foundation program account for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028. No more than $120,000 can be spent in any one fiscal year. The money cannot be used for other purposes, and any unspent funds return on June 30, 2028. The department must ask for ongoing funding for this position in its next standard budget.
