Tougher penalties for theft and shoplifting

Beginning July 1, 2026, Wyoming raises penalties for theft and related shoplifting tools. For stealing under $1,000, the maximum punishment is up to 1 year in jail and up to $1,500 in fines (was 6 months and $750). Using theft‑detection shielding devices carries the same higher misdemeanor limits. A third or later separate theft‑related conviction is a felony, with up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000, including similar municipal or out‑of‑state offenses.
