Arconic's Davenport Works in Iowa runs the world's widest aluminum rolling mill at 220 inches — the only facility on earth capable of producing single-piece aluminum-lithium wing skin panels for large commercial aircraft (Boeing 787, Airbus A350). The same hot mill that rolled wing skins for the Air Force's B-21 Raider bomber also produces aluminum beverage can sheet. When aerospace demand surges (new widebody orders) or when national security priorities require defense plate, Arconic's hot mill time is diverted away from can sheet production. The world's most complex aerospace rolling mill and the world's most mundane food/beverage container are competitors for capacity at the same facility.

Arconic was created in November 2016 when Alcoa Corporation split into two publicly-traded companies: Alcoa (retaining the upstream mining/smelting) and Arconic (retaining the downstream rolling and engineered products). The split was engineered by activist investor Elliott Management under CEO Klaus Kleinfeld — the theory being that Alcoa's upstream and downstream businesses had different valuations and should be separated to unlock shareholder value. Arconic's heritage runs through the original Pittsburgh Reduction Company (founded 1888 by Charles Martin Hall after he discovered the electrolytic aluminum reduction process that made aluminum commercially viable — one of the defining US industrial chemistry discoveries). Hall's 1886 patent on electrochemical aluminum reduction, commercialized as Pittsburgh Reduction Company/Alcoa, established America's aluminum industry and the corporate lineage of both Alcoa and Arconic. The same corporate DNA that makes US Davenport Works aerospace rolling mills dates to a 23-year-old Ohio inventor's kitchen chemistry experiments in 1886.
