Carbon black is a petrochemical-derived compound that gives tires their black color, UV resistance, and 25-30% of their mechanical strength. By producing its own carbon black, BKT is insulated from both the carbon black commodity supply chain AND the price volatility that affects every other tire maker. Balkrishna Industries was founded in 1961 in Mumbai by the Poddar family as a bicycle tire and tube business. Through the 1970s and 1980s it expanded into two-wheeler tires for the Indian market. The pivot to agricultural and off-highway tires happened in the 1990s, when founder Arvind Poddar recognized that the global OHT tire market was underserved by Bridgestone, Michelin, and Continental -- all of whom treated OHT as a low-priority segment relative to passenger and truck tires. BKT went directly at the underserved OHT gap rather than competing against established brands in passenger tires. The $500M Bhuj, Gujarat greenfield plant (opened 2015) was the bet that validated this strategy -- at 120,000 tons/year ag and industrial tire capacity, with an integrated 165,600 t/yr carbon black plant, it is one of the largest purpose-built specialty tire facilities in the world, built by an Indian family business that started making bicycle tires 60 years earlier.
