Did you know2024
CSPC Pharmaceutical Group (HKEX: 1093) is known globally as one of China's largest cephalosporin API producers — the 7-ACA and cephalexin that goes into cephalosporin antibiotics sold in US and European pharmacies. What is less widely known outside China is that CSPC also has a significant and growing innovative drug portfolio targeting Chinese hospitals — branded oncology drugs (liposomal formulations, targeted cancer therapies), cardiovascular specialty drugs, and CNS medications. The same Shijiazhuang company supplying commodity cephalosporin APIs to Western generic drug manufacturers is simultaneously launching branded patented specialty drugs at Chinese hospitals in oncology and cardiovascular — competing with Pfizer, Roche, and AstraZeneca for Chinese hospital market share. CSPC represents the emerging Chinese pharma model: bulk API exports to fund R&D investment in Chinese innovative drugs, targeting both China domestic and eventual global markets.
CSPC Pharmaceutical Group Limited ↗Origin2023
CSPC Pharmaceutical Group's roots are in Shijiazhuang, Hebei — a city whose pharmaceutical industry was established in the 1950s with Soviet technical assistance as part of China's First Five-Year Plan. North China Pharmaceutical Corporation (NCPC), CSPC's corporate ancestor, was among the first facilities the Soviet Union helped China build to produce antibiotics domestically — penicillin and streptomycin were the target products, critical for treating tuberculosis and other infectious diseases that were killing millions in early PRC. Shijiazhuang's pharmaceutical cluster grew from this Soviet-assisted founding into the world's most concentrated antibiotic API manufacturing city. CSPC was formed through the reorganization and partial privatization of NCPC's affiliated companies, listing on Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1994. The Cold War-era Soviet technology transfer that built Shijiazhuang's antibiotic industry is the foundation on which today's globally dominant Chinese cephalosporin API supply chain stands.
