    The FilmTec thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis membrane was invented in 1977 by John Cadotte and Robert Petersen at their start-up FilmTec Corporation in Edina, Minnesota — a suburb of Minneapolis. Cadotte had previously developed the first practical polyamide TFC membrane while working at North Star Research Institute, discovering that a chemically stable polyamide barrier layer on a polysulfone support could achieve dramatically better water flux and salt rejection than the cellulose acetate membranes that dominated RO at the time. FilmTec was acquired by Dow Chemical in 1985 for approximately $17 million — a transaction widely regarded as one of the most value-creative acquisitions in the chemical industry's history, as the technology acquired for $17M now underpins a multi-billion-dollar global water treatment business serving over 10,000 desalination and water reuse plants in 100+ countries. Dow later merged with DuPont in 2017, and the water solutions business became part of DuPont. The TFC membrane that Cadotte and Petersen invented in a Minnesota suburb now determines whether millions of people in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Israel, Singapore, and California have access to potable water from seawater and brackish water sources.
