Huntsman MDI (Rubinate brand) serves three structurally distinct construction and consumer applications simultaneously: (1) Building insulation — rigid polyurethane foam from MDI+polyol reaction is the highest-performing insulation material per inch; building codes increasingly require rigid foam board or spray foam; Huntsman MDI enables building energy efficiency compliance; (2) OSB structural binder — pMDI (polymeric MDI) is used as a no-added-formaldehyde binder in oriented strand board; MDI-bonded OSB meets strict formaldehyde emission requirements (CARB ATCM, European E1/E0) that PF resin OSB may not; (3) Automotive flexible foam — MDI-based flexible polyurethane foam is the seat cushion material in every modern vehicle (cars, trucks, SUVs); car seats that make driving comfortable contain Huntsman MDI chemistry. The same MDI molecule makes a home warmer (insulation), a house structurally sound (OSB binder), and a car seat comfortable — three separate comfort and construction supply chains from one chemical reaction. MDI is one of only four global chemical systems (alongside rare earths, semiconductors, and petroleum refining) where fewer than 5 producers control the entire global market.

Huntsman Corporation was founded in 1970 by Jon M. Huntsman Sr. in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jon Huntsman Sr. started his business career in the egg carton business (designing the first hinged clamshell egg carton for McDonald's), then pivoted to chemical manufacturing. He built Huntsman Corporation into one of the largest privately-held US chemical companies before taking it public in 2005. The Huntsman family has been prominent in Utah Republican politics and philanthropy: Jon Huntsman Sr. donated USD 225 million to the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah — the largest gift in the history of American medicine at the time. His son Jon Huntsman Jr. served as US Ambassador to China (2009-2011), Governor of Utah, and ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. A family that made its industrial fortune in MDI polyurethane chemistry operates simultaneously as one of the major US chemical manufacturers AND as a prominent political family in Western Republican politics.
