Indium Corporation's Germanium Corporation of America (GCA) subsidiary, operating at the Utica, New York facility, produces germanium tetrachloride (GeCl4) — the chemical precursor deposited into silica optical fiber preforms to create the higher-refractive-index core that guides light signals. GeCl4 is also the precursor for high-purity germanium metal used in infrared (IR) optical lenses for thermal imaging cameras, night-vision equipment, and military targeting systems. GCA is one of the few domestic US GeCl4 producers and represents significant portion of US germanium processing outside of Chinese-controlled supply. The same Utica facility that supplies GeCl4 to Corning and Prysmian for fiber optic preform manufacturing (civilian telecommunications infrastructure) also supplies high-purity Ge for defense IR optics. China controls approximately 65-70% of global germanium production and imposed export controls on germanium in August 2023 — instantly elevating GCA's domestic US GeCl4 capacity to strategic importance for both telecommunications fiber manufacturing and defense thermal imaging system supply chains simultaneously.
Indium Corporation / Germanium Corporation of America ↗Origin2024
Indium Corporation was founded in 1934 in Utica, New York by Dr. Merrill Harsh (under the name Indium Corporation of America), becoming the world's first company to commercially produce and sell indium metal — at a time when the element had no established industrial applications. Indium (atomic number 49, discovered in 1863 by spectroscopic analysis of zinc ore) had sat in periodic table obscurity for 70 years with no commercial use when Harsh bet that applications would emerge. His bet proved correct: indium became critical for ITO (indium tin oxide) transparent electrodes in every LCD and OLED display; for low-temperature solders in electronics assembly; for high-conductivity thermal interface materials between CPUs and heatsinks; and for CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) solar cells. A 1934 speculative investment in a metal with no market became an 80-year family-owned critical materials business that is now essential infrastructure for the smartphone screen, the server CPU, and the solar panel supply chains simultaneously.
