    The NdPr oxide Lynas ships from a single Malaysian facility simultaneously feeds three industries with almost no mutual awareness: EV motor manufacturers (Toyota, GM suppliers) buy NdPr for permanent magnets; wind turbine OEMs (Vestas, Siemens Gamesa) buy it for direct-drive generators; and US defense contractors buy it for missile guidance fins, radar cross-section reduction coatings, and submarine sonar transducers. These buyers compete in different markets and rarely know they depend on the same Australian mine. The US Department of Defense recognized this concentration risk and awarded Lynas a contract to build a US-based rare earth separation facility in Texas (announced 2022, DoD-funded), making Lynas one of the only commercial mining companies to receive direct US military supply chain investment.

    Lynas Rare Earths traces its strategic position to a single geological anomaly: Mount Weld in Western Australia is one of the richest known rare earth deposits on Earth, discovered in the 1980s but considered uneconomic until China began restricting rare earth exports in 2010. That export shock triggered a global scramble for non-Chinese supply, and Lynas -- which had held the deposit for years -- became the only non-Chinese company to build a fully integrated rare earth mining and separation operation at industrial scale. Its LAMP facility in Kuantan, Malaysia opened in 2012 after years of protests and regulatory battles over radioactive thorium waste.

    Lynas produced approximately 6,700 MT of NdPr oxide in FY2023 (year ending June 2023), representing roughly 12% of global NdPr supply outside China. Its Mount Weld deposit contains an estimated 1.5 million tonnes of rare earth oxide equivalent at ~8% grade, giving it decades of mine life. The LAMP facility in Malaysia processes ~21,000 MT of rare earth oxide equivalent annually at full capacity. The planned Texas facility is designed for an additional 5,000 MT/yr of light rare earth separation, specifically to serve US defense and EV supply chains that cannot legally source from China under NDAA restrictions.
