  • Did you know2020

The same Nanshan Aluminum facility in Longkou, Shandong that produces aerospace-grade 7075 aluminum plate for aircraft structural applications also produces the thin aluminum strip (0.5-1.0mm wide, 0.12-0.18mm thick) that is crimped into the nose bridge of N95 and KN95 respirators and surgical masks. In March 2020, when global demand for N95 masks surged 10,000% due to COVID-19, Chinese aluminum companies including Nanshan rapidly expanded output of aluminum nose wire — a product that uses the same rolling mills and alloy systems as aerospace aluminum, scaled to a vastly different dimension. A Chinese aluminum rolling company simultaneously produces: aerospace structural plate for COMAC commercial aircraft and Chinese military jets, and the nose wire that bends to fit a healthcare worker's face in a PPE mask. Both are aluminum products from the same Shandong mill; both depend on the same aluminum alloy rolling infrastructure.

  • Concentration2022

China produces approximately 56% of the world's primary aluminum and an even higher percentage of specialty aluminum flat-rolled products (foil, fin stock, brazing sheet) through a combination of state-owned giants (Chalco/Aluminum Corporation of China) and private/semi-private operators like Nanshan. US and EU import tariffs on Chinese aluminum (Section 232 tariffs at 10-25% in the US) have redirected Chinese aluminum through third countries (Vietnam, Malaysia) or substituted with domestic capacity, but the fundamental Chinese processing infrastructure advantage — low energy costs, integrated supply chains, and aggressive capacity investment — means that any global aluminum product shortage traces back to Chinese capacity utilization decisions. Nanshan Aluminum's production rates in Shandong affect whether US HVAC manufacturers can source fin stock, whether Korean EV battery makers can source cathode foil, and whether global N95 mask manufacturers can source nose wire — simultaneously.

  • Origin2024

Nanshan Aluminum was established in 1995 as a township enterprise in Longkou City, Shandong Province — a coal and aluminum resource-rich area of eastern China. The company is controlled by the Nanshan Group conglomerate, a local Shandong industrial empire that owns aluminum, aviation services, real estate, textiles, and vocational schools from a single county in northeastern China. What began as a commodity aluminum ingot producer grew by 2020 into one of the few Chinese companies with certified aerospace-grade aluminum production capability — 7XXX series high-strength alloys required for aircraft wing structures and fuselage skins. Nanshan is now a primary supplier of aluminum structural materials for the COMAC C919 — China's domestically manufactured commercial aircraft that Airbus and Boeing are competing against — making a Shandong township enterprise's aluminum supply chain decisions relevant to Chinese aviation sovereignty.
