The same Nanshan Aluminum facility in Longkou, Shandong that produces aerospace-grade 7075 aluminum plate for aircraft structural applications also produces the thin aluminum strip (0.5-1.0mm wide, 0.12-0.18mm thick) that is crimped into the nose bridge of N95 and KN95 respirators and surgical masks. Nanshan Aluminum was established in 1995 as a township enterprise in Longkou City, Shandong Province — a coal and aluminum resource-rich area of eastern China. The company is controlled by the Nanshan Group conglomerate, a local Shandong industrial empire that owns aluminum, aviation services, real estate, textiles, and vocational schools from a single county in northeastern China. What began as a commodity aluminum ingot producer grew by 2020 into one of the few Chinese companies with certified aerospace-grade aluminum production capability — 7XXX series high-strength alloys required for aircraft wing structures and fuselage skins. Nanshan is now a primary supplier of aluminum structural materials for the COMAC C919 — China's domestically manufactured commercial aircraft that Airbus and Boeing are competing against — making a Shandong township enterprise's aluminum supply chain decisions relevant to Chinese aviation sovereignty.
