Canpotex — the exclusive export marketing joint venture between Nutrien and Mosaic — controls 100% of Canadian potash exports to offshore markets. Every tonne of Canadian potash sold internationally goes through a single sales channel. This is a legally-sanctioned export cartel in all but name: both companies are prohibited from independently undercutting Canpotex prices. Canada's Competition Bureau has reviewed Canpotex twice (2010, 2018) and allowed it to continue.

Nutrien controls 20% of global potash supply through its 6 Saskatchewan underground mines — but that concentration understates the strategic importance because potash supply is heavily concentrated: Canada (Nutrien + Mosaic) and Russia/Belarus (Uralkali + Belaruskali) together control ~75% of global potash production. When the EU and US sanctioned Belarus after the 2020 Lukashenko election crackdown and 2021 Ryanair forced landing, Belaruskali (which produces ~40% of global potash through Minsk-based JSC Belaruskali) faced export restrictions. In 2022 as Russia invaded Ukraine, Canpotex (Nutrien + Mosaic export cooperative) faced calls to immediately expand production to replace sanctioned Belarusian supply. The 2022 potash crisis: crop potassium prices spiked 300%+, threatening crop yields globally. Nutrien's Saskatchewan mines — which had operated well below nameplate capacity for years — became geopolitically strategic overnight.

Nutrien Ltd. was created in 2018 by the merger of Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PotashCorp) and Agrium Inc. — two longtime rivals and the world's largest and second-largest potash producers respectively. The merger was contentious: PotashCorp was the world's largest potash mining company; Agrium was a major nitrogen fertilizer producer that had also built a massive 1,500-store retail agricultural supply network. Canadian regulators required divestitures. The merged company created the world's largest agricultural nutrient company by production AND the largest farm retail network in North America in a single deal. PotashCorp CEO Chuck Magro became CEO; the Agrium retail business (rebranded Nutrien Ag Solutions) ended up being roughly equal in revenue to the mining business — making Nutrien half mining company, half agricultural retailer.
