Cold-rolling metal to gauge requires rolling oil; machining requires cutting coolant; hardening requires a quenchant; drawing wire requires drawing lubricant. One of Quaker Houghton's quietly critical lines is fire-resistant hydraulic fluid. In underground coal mines, steel mills and aluminum die-casting, ordinary mineral-oil hydraulics are a catastrophic fire risk — a pressurized leak near an ignition source or molten metal can atomize and ignite. Fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (water-glycol and synthetic ester types) exist specifically to prevent that, and they are safety-mandated in those environments. So beyond "lubricants," Quaker Houghton occupies a safety-chemistry niche where the product's job is to not burn — a small but life-safety-critical dependency inside heavy industry.
