Resonac Holdings K.K. (Tokyo; TSE: 4004; formed 2023 by merger of Showa Denko K.K. and Hitachi Chemical Company Ltd.) is Japan's second-largest ABF substrate film producer after Ajinomoto Fine-Techno, and major semiconductor materials company. Resonac's semiconductor materials division produces ABF-equivalent build-up films under the brand name 'MCL' (Multilayer build-up resin for Core-Less substrates). The merger creating Resonac combined Showa Denko (industrial chemicals, graphite electrodes, specialty gases) with Hitachi Chemical (now Resonac Holdings; adhesives, printed circuit board materials, semiconductor packaging resins) — creating a $8B+ semiconductor materials company directly competing with Ajinomoto in FC-BGA substrates. Showa Denko had itself absorbed Hitachi Chemical in 2021 and rebranded to Resonac in 2023.

[single-source] Resonac Holdings (formerly Showa Denko) is the only non-Chinese supplier of synthetic graphite anode material currently qualified and delivering at volume to Western cell makers. Resonac's SCMG (carbon-coated graphite) anode material is qualified in Panasonic's cylindrical 2170 and 4680 cells — which power Tesla Model 3, Y, and Cybertruck — making it the critical non-China anode material in the largest-volume Western EV supply chain. If Resonac's Omachi, Nagano plant were disrupted (earthquake — the plant is in the Japanese Alps near a major fault system), the Panasonic-Tesla supply chain would have no qualified substitute. Resonac represents approximately 5% of global synthetic graphite anode supply but ~100% of the available non-Chinese qualification for high-volume Western cylindrical cell production. The concentration risk is not in absolute volume but in the absence of any other non-Chinese qualified alternative at volume.

Resonac Holdings is embedded simultaneously in three industries through a shared carbon processing competency: (1) steelmaking — Resonac's Showa Denko heritage includes graphite electrode manufacturing for EAF steelmakers, who use graphite electrodes to melt scrap steel; (2) EV batteries — Resonac's synthetic graphite anode material (SCMG) is qualified in Panasonic's cylindrical cells powering Tesla vehicles, the primary non-Chinese graphite anode in Western EV supply chains; and (3) semiconductor packaging — Resonac's MCL/ABF-equivalent build-up films are in advanced FC-BGA chip packages. Resonac Holdings was created in January 2023 by rebranding Showa Denko K.K. after its 2021 acquisition of Hitachi Chemical Company. Showa Denko itself was founded in 1939 as a wartime merger of Showa Fertilizer and Japan Electric Industry (Nippon Electro-Kagaku) — a Japanese government-directed combination to build a chemical and industrial materials company for the war economy. Showa Denko grew postwar into one of Japan's largest diversified chemical companies, with graphite electrode manufacturing (for electric arc furnace steelmaking), chlor-alkali, aluminum, and specialty chemicals. Hitachi Chemical, absorbed by Showa Denko in 2021, brought semiconductor packaging materials (PCB adhesives, ABF-equivalent build-up films) and automotive materials — adding semiconductor supply chain exposure to Showa Denko's industrial chemical base. The Resonac rebranding (combining "resonance" and "chemical" concepts) was intended to signal the transformed semiconductor materials identity of the combined entity.
