RHI Magnesita refractories line the inside of steelmaking furnaces (70% of revenue), but the same magnesite and dolomite mineral chemistry goes into cement kiln linings, glass furnace crowns, and petrochemical reactor vessels. When a major refractory producer faces a raw material shortage or production disruption, the impact is not confined to steel: cement plants cannot fire limestone, glass manufacturers cannot melt silica, and chemical refineries cannot process feedstocks. All four industries share the same deadburned magnesia and chrome-based refractory chemistry. The magnesite deposits that make this possible are concentrated in Austria, China, North Korea, and Russia -- with Austria (RHI Magnesita) being the primary non-Communist world source of high-quality natural magnesite for Western industrial customers.

RHI Magnesita was formed by the 2017 merger of RHI AG (Vienna, founded 1834) and Magnesita Refratarios (Belo Horizonte, founded 1939). RHI traces its origins to Vienna-area limestone quarrying during the Habsburg Empire's industrialization. The Radenthein magnesite mine in Carinthia, Austria -- one of the world's highest-purity magnesite deposits -- has been RHI's core raw material source for decades and remains a strategically critical Austrian mining asset. Magnesita was founded to supply refractories to Brazil's first integrated steel mill, Companhia Siderurgica Nacional, which was itself created by Vargas in the same 1940s state-enterprise wave that created Vale. The merger created the first company capable of supplying refractory solutions to every major steel region globally from owned raw material mines.
