    SGL Carbon's Moses Lake, Washington carbon fiber plant (BMW joint venture) uses Columbia River hydroelectric power to produce automotive-grade carbon fiber for BMW electric vehicle bodies at approximately 50% lower CO2 footprint than natural gas-powered CF production. This means the carbon fiber that reduces weight in a BMW iX electric SUV (enabling greater electric range) is made with the same renewable energy source (Pacific Northwest hydropower) as the aluminum smelters it replaced in the region. The environmental equation is circular: renewable energy → carbon fiber → lighter EV → less energy needed per mile → less renewable energy consumed in operation. Moses Lake's proximity to cheap hydropower is what makes this possible — the same geographic advantage that drew aluminum smelters to the Columbia River basin in the 20th century now draws carbon fiber production in the 21st.
