Speira's Grevenbroich complex sits adjacent to Alunorf — a 50/50 joint venture between Speira and Novelis that produces ~1.5 million tonnes/year of rolled aluminum in a single plant, making it the largest aluminum rolling mill in Europe. Alunorf produces hot-rolled coil that feeds Speira's cold-rolling lines (which produce the thin foil substrate down to 6 µm). A single large facility producing the feedstock for a substantial share of European food-grade thin foil exists within a Rhine industrial zone also housing major chemical plants (BASF, Bayer) — co-located hazard exposure.

Speira was created in June 2021 when Norsk Hydro ASA sold its aluminum rolling and recycling operations for €1.48B to KPS Capital Partners, a US private equity firm. The divested business — including the Grevenbroich, Germany complex and 10 other European rolling sites — originated from Norsk Hydro's 2002 acquisition of VAW Aluminium AG (Vereinigte Aluminium-Werke, founded 1917 as a German war-economy aluminum producer). The Grevenbroich rolling complex was built by VAW in the postwar era as the Rhine industrial corridor rebuilt West German heavy industry. Hydro's divestiture of the rolling business (to focus on upstream aluminum production and green aluminum) and Speira's PE ownership represents the continuing fragmentation of the European aluminum supply chain into upstream mining/smelting (Hydro, RUSAL, Alcoa) and downstream rolling/converting (Speira, Novelis, Constellium, Aleris) operated by different ownership groups.
