Origin2023
STERIS plc traces its origin to American Sterilizer Company (AMSCO), founded in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1894 to make steam sterilizers for surgical instruments -- addressing a critical need as antiseptic surgery became standard practice after Lister's carbolic acid discoveries. AMSCO was renamed STERIS Corporation in 1985. The company grew through acquisitions of Isomedix (gamma irradiation), Synergy Health (UK medical sterilization), and other sterile processing businesses. STERIS incorporated in Ireland in 2015 when it acquired Synergy Health -- one of the first major US companies to reincorporate internationally through an inversion transaction specifically to access lower Irish corporate tax rates. A Pennsylvania sterilizer company founded 130 years ago to serve the antiseptic surgery era is now a Dublin-headquartered multinational that sterilizes medical devices for hospitals globally AND operates contract EtO sterilization competing directly with Sterigenics. Both companies service the same customers from different parts of the same supply chain: STERIS sells hospital sterilizers AND provides contract sterilization for medical device manufacturers.
